Jay Sekulow: “We are witnessing the the greatest attack on religious freedom and it goes way beyond the Catholic Church.”

After lecturing conservative Christians to keep their religion out of politics, the law and government, liberal activists are now coercing their views on people of faith at the expense of First Amendment freedoms, Jordan Sekulow, Director of Policy and International Operations for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), said during a panel discussion this morning at CPAC 2012.   See more...

Oregon Republicans Pass 2012 ‘Freedom Primary’
Non-Affiliated Voters invited to vote with Republicans in 3 statewide races

Albany, OR – The Central Committee of the Oregon Republican Party, at its winter meeting yesterday in Albany, voted to allow registered non-affiliated voters in Oregon to participate in the Party’s May 2012 primary election for partisan statewide offices.

The decision affects the three primary election races for state office: Secretary of State, Attorney General and Treasurer, and applies only for the 2012 election.

“We have seen the Democrats become more and more beholden to special interest groups that we do not think reflect the values and vision that a majority of Oregonians have for our state,” said Allen Alley, Chairman of the Oregon GOP.

"We believe that the Republican Party messages of responsible, responsive and efficient government coupled with fostering economic prosperity are not just Republican values, they are values that non-affiliated voters and even Democrats can embrace.  Non-affiliated voters are the only group that has not been allowed to cast a ballot in primary elections for partisan state offices. The Oregon GOP is sending them a message: we want you.”

Senators seek state control of federal railroad grant lands

January 24, 2012

By SARAH ROSS - Oregon Capital News

SALEM, Ore.- Two legislators want to bring control of federal railroad lands back into the hands of the state with a new bill proposed for February’s session.

State Senators Fred Girod, R-Lyons, and Jason Atkinson, R-Central Point, have proposed a bill requesting that the federal government give “full management authority” of the Oregon and California Railroad grant lands to the state government.

The lawmakers say this change would resuscitate local economies and better protect forest health.

Currently, rural counties receive federal money intended to replace revenue lost because the lands belong to the federal government instead of the state, according to the senators.

“Every few years Oregon counties are pushed to the brink of catastrophe when federal timber payments expire,” said Senator Girod in a statement to the press. “It is time we took back control of our own destiny.”

Senator Atkinson, likewise, said that if those federal subsidies stop, it’s “only just” for that land to be returned to the state for “its stewardship and benefit.”

The bill, Senate Joint Memorial 201, must pass both the House and the Senate before going to the governor for his signature in order to be officially presented to Congress and President Obama.

Kitzhaber: Timber counties may be able to save money by regionalizing jails, other services

Jan 24, 2012 JONATHAN J. COOPER  Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. — Some jails and other local government work could be regionalized to help rural counties struggling with the expiration of federal timber payments, Gov.
John Kitzhaber said Tuesday.

Finding new ways to help timber-dependent counties will be one of the key issues confronting state lawmakers during a one-month legislative session that begins Feb. 1, Kitzhaber and legislative leaders told Oregon newspaper editors in a meeting at the Capitol organized by The Associated Press.

"There's an opportunity here to revisit the relationship between the state and the counties," Kitzhaber said. "Maybe there are certain functions of local government that could be done on a more regional basis."  Continued...

Loss of federal forest payments has Oregon counties looking for revenue while having millions that can't be tapped

ALERT! House bill would bar federal lawsuits against states that assist with immigration enforcement!

Rep.  Diane Black (R-TN) will soon introduce a bill to thwart the Obama  administration’s lawsuits against states that seek to enforce laws  against illegal immigration. The legislation, a sibling bill to S 1856,  would prohibit the Department of Justice from using taxpayer funds to  sue states over their immigration enforcement laws.

It  specifically mentions laws passed in Arizona, Alabama, Missouri,  Oklahoma, Utah, Indiana, South Carolina, and Georgia. Attorney General  Holder has already filed suits against South Carolina, Utah, Alabama,  and Arizona, and is reviewing immigration laws passed by other states.

As you know Alabama passed the toughest state anti-illegal alien bill this summer. While the pro-illegal alien lobby predicted widespread economic disaster and higher unemployment, the opposite occurred.
November 21, 2011 - Oregonians for Immigration Reform [ofir@oregonir.org]

September was the first full month that the illegal immigration law was in force and the unemployment rate fell from 9.8 percent to 9.3 percent. One of the laws advocates, Chuck Ellis, a city council member in Albertville, the main town in Marshall County in northern Alabama, said, “The latest fall in unemployment numbers is proof that American citizens will work, and that self-deportation [by illegal aliens] due to the Alabama law is occurring.” It has been documented that thousands of illegal aliens have fled the state opening up jobs for American citizens.

Meanwhile in Oregon unemployment remains stuck at 9.5 percent, no different than last year. While 200,000 Oregonians are out of work, there are 120,000 illegal aliens working in Oregon.
