Ballot returns indicate decent turnout for Oregon congressional special election
So far, the five counties in Oregon's 1st Congressional District are reporting a turnout of about 25 percent, with a week to go before the Jan. 31 special election.
Based on the rate of ballot returns in other recent special elections, that puts the congressional race on track for a turnout of somewhere in the high 50s. That would come close to the turnout in the last two statewide special elections -- both of which had hotly contested measures that attracted widespread public interest. Read more...
The push to start taking back our country begins in Oregon on January 31 with the Special Election in Congressional House District 1, (see map). The eyes of the nation are upon us as the election draws near. Lane County Republicans are committed to helping Rob Cornilles, our Republican Candidate win the seat vacated by David Wu; a seat that has been dominated by democrats since 1974.

A message from Art Robinson...
While we have a nine and one half month battle ahead of us, the race for Congress in Oregon District 1 has only two more weeks to go, with Republican businessman Rob Cornilles now in a statistical tie (averages are 4 points apart) with his Democrat opponent.
This is the district vacated by DeFazio's friend David Wu, a Democrat whose indiscretions became so evident that even Wu could see that he was unfit to continue. Now the leftist wife of Wu's personal attorney is trying to hold the seat for the Democrats. Already the liberal socialists have poured $2 million into the campaign, but Cornilles keeps gaining in the polls.
Oregon is rapidly tipping away from the statists who have long held it in bondage. If Cornilles can win and hold District 1 in 2012 and we win District 4, the Oregon congressional delegation will no longer be majority Democrat - and we have a great chance in other races too.
In these last two weeks of the District 1 race, Rob Cornilles needs some special help. To counter the Democrat media blitz, he especially needs volunteers for his telephone campaign. Modern technology makes it possible for volunteers to work with him on this without ever leaving their homes.
Also, of course, he needs all the financial contributions he can get.
To volunteer, contact his campaign directly. The Cornilles campaign telephone number is 503-922-2014. For more information, see www.CornillesForCongress.com.
We are all now in a nationwide contest to take our country back. Republicans, Independents, Constitutionalists, Libertarians, the many facets of the Tea Party, and even many Democrats are welding themselves together in a movement so strong that it will not be denied.
We are all different. After we throw the big government statists in Washington out of Congress, we can discuss our differences. For now, let's give a hand to every voter, campaign worker, and candidate who is marching in our direction.
Please give Rob Cornilles a helping hand to push him over the top in District 1.

NRCC Spending Money in Oregon Special Election
January 17, 2012 -
Scott Bland - National Journal
The National Republican Congressional Committee will begin airing a 30-second television advertisement in coordination with Republican Rob Cornilles's campaign on Wednesday, marking the first time a GOP-aligned outside group has purchased air time in the Oregon special election.
The ad goes after Democratic candidate Suzanne Bonamici for attacking Cornilles and slams her as a Medicare-cutting, tax-raising politician "with no record of job creation" before touching on Cornilles's experience as a businessman.
The coordinated ad comes on the heels of a Cornilles campaign poll, released over the weekend, that showed the Republican trailing Bonamici by only four points, 46-42 percent. The most recent public polling in the district had Bonamici ahead by double digits. Continue reading...
A letter from Rob Cornilles: 1/16/2012
Dear Friends and Supporters--
Today, we've got great news that this race is ON! While the poll on January 31st is the only one that counts, new numbers make it very clear that WE HAVE THE MOMENTUM. This is now a very close race with the other side nervous and committed to spending even more D.C. money to try and buy Oregon's First District.
A Moore Information survey of First District voters conducted on January 11th and 12th shows that we have closed the margin to just 4 points and trail 46% to 42%.
A Republican challenger hasn't been this close this late in an OR-1 race for decades. And now, we're two weeks away from not only making Oregon history, but sending a clear message to the rest of the country: We're tired of the Establishment, fed up with gridlock, and ready to change Washington and our state. The country is watching what you and I do with this opportunity!
With the race this close, WE NEED EVERY VOTE! Please turn in your ballots. Then, will you:
CONTRIBUTE whatever possible to help us fight against the truckloads of money the Democrats are now hauling into the district? In addition to the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee, which is spending over $1 million in negative ads against me, Nancy Pelosi's "Super PAC," the House Majority Fund, just placed hundreds of thousands of dollars in even more negative TV ads over the next two weeks. Throw in the Democrat Party of Oregon, EMILY's List and Planned Parenthood TV and direct mail, and the money unions are spending on paid "volunteers" for my rival and you get the sense this is a salvage operation. I need your help RIGHT NOW.
VOLUNTEER at our campaign headquarters? This is absolutely critical for us to win: I must have supporters and volunteers show up NOW. Today! Tonight! Sacrifice one night of TV watching or Facebook posting and come help us. Spend a couple of hours doing something simple that goes a long way to victory. In a tight election like this, guaranteeing that my supporters do indeed vote through our Get Out The Vote effort will likely be the difference.
I've made a commitment to you. Will you recommit to help us today?

Bonamici, Cornilles tangle over Social Security, immigration and other hot-button issues
Published: Saturday, January 14, 2012, 10:15 PM
By Jeff Mapes, The Oregonian
When it comes to Social Security, Democratic congressional candidate Suzanne Bonamici doesn't venture far beyond talking about raising taxes on the wealthy to shore up the retirement system, something that appears dead on arrival politically.
Her Republican rival, Rob Cornilles, is willing to go further out on a political limb by suggesting he would support a bipartisan deal like the one cut in 1983 that could gradually trim benefits for future Social Security recipients.
But Cornilles is more cautious on how to deal with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country. He says it's not practical to try to deport them, but he rejects Bonamici's call for giving them a path to citizenship.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber gets standing ovation, but not everyone is happy with State of the State
Published: Friday, January 13, 2012, 10:47 PM
Gov. John Kitzhaber cautioned Oregonians on Friday not to lose their nerve just as the state is beginning to make sweeping changes in health care and education.
"Change is always difficult. It always makes some people uncomfortable," Kitzhaber said in his
State of the State address delivered to a sold-out Portland City Club crowd of nearly 500.
"There are some who suggest we have come too far, too fast," the governor said. "What I hear from Oregonians is that we have not come far enough."
